A great issue for architects—not architecture itself—is the power to resist saying yes to unethical expansionist projects. So perhaps the first question should not be "Can we build it?" but "Should we?"

What if we measured architecture by the systems it creates—not just the buildings it leaves behind?

We often debate architecture through the lens of sustainability, beauty, or social impact. All are important. But another question deserves equal attention: Does a project make a place more resilient—or more dependent? Large-scale developments can drive growth, but they can also concentrate risk. When monoculture (one developer, tenant, or industry) dominates, an entire local economy becomes more vulnerable. Perhaps architecture should be ethically judged by different metrics
